How Crochet Helped Me Heal After a Major Shift In My Life
Share
When a relationship ends, it can feel like everything is falling apart. The shared memories, routines, and future plans vanish, leaving you feeling lost and uncertain. During this emotional whirlwind, I stumbled upon crochet, and what started as a way to fill spare hours became an important lifeline.
My crochet journey began back in 2017, when I decided to teach myself this creative craft, with the help of some amazing online tutors on YouTube, including @BlossomCrochet and @Naztazia, as well as a fantastic local tutor, @lovanii.design.
Here’s how crochet became my source of comfort and healing:
1. Finding Calm in the Chaos of a Breakup
After my relationship breakdown, my mind felt like a constant storm of thoughts. I found it hard to concentrate, and every day seemed to bring a new wave of emotion. I knew I needed something to help me focus and calm the chaos in my head. That’s when I turned to crochet.
Thanks to the clear and patient tutorials from YouTube channels like @blossomcrochet, I began with simple projects like granny squares and small accessories. The act of looping the yarn and creating something tangible gave me a sense of control. Each stitch felt like a small victory, a step toward regaining my sense of self. As I worked, the repetitive motions helped me to relax, clear my mind, and feel grounded again. Crochet became a form of meditation, offering peace during a time of emotional upheaval.
2. Rebuilding Myself One Stitch at a Time
After the breakup, I realised I needed to rediscover who I was outside of the relationship. Crochet became the perfect way to express myself and explore my creativity. In addition to the online tutorials, I also worked with a local tutor, @lovanii.design, whose expert guidance brought a personal touch to my learning journey. With her help, I ventured into more complex projects, such as a colourful throw granny squares blanket.
Choosing the colours, learning new stitches, and watching the project grow was a profound experience. It felt like I was crafting not just a piece of art, but a new version of myself. Every stitch symbolised a step toward healing, and the progress I made with each row reinforced my growing sense of independence and strength. The blanket wasn’t just a physical creation; it was a representation of my emotional recovery.
